Summary

The Lead Specialist of CEO Communications will support development and execution of best-in-class CEO communications for the Office of the CEO. The ideal candidate will have previous experience creating and designing impactful executive communications materials. The ideal candidate will be exceptionally skilled at understanding how to capture and effectively reflect the CEO’s voice. The position reports to the Vice President of Communications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic communications and logistical support for the President and CEO of SHRM

  • Create, drive, and manage communications strategies for SHRM’s President and CEO that advance SHRM thought leadership and ensure timely, consistent messaging across multiple communication channels.

  • Work products include presentations, talking points, correspondence, social media posts, op-eds, executive briefing books, video messages, background material and research for events and meetings

  • Work with meeting and event managers and content experts to gather specific information and details required to ensure the CEO is prepared to either present or participate in public and private conversations

  • Research and stay up-to-date on relevant and selected topics for use in preparing communications

  • Ensure that messages and materials reflect the CEO’s voice

  • Partnering with the Vice President of Communications and leaders across the organization to continually identify high-impact communications opportunities to enhance CEO’s external presence and use CEO as an ambassador of SHRM’s thought leadership

  • Travel with the CEO when requested to provide general support, including advance work, meeting preparation, and logistics coordination; Capture and note key insights to later integrate into strategic communications

  • Create and design PowerPoint presentations to turn written word /stories into visual communication.

  • Continuously monitor SHRM business performance, national media, industry news and research, and other sources for trends, statistics, and ideas to develop a thought-leading point of view for the President and CEO.

  • Work closely with colleagues across the organization (e.g., Media Affairs, Marketing, Research, Editorial, Events, etc.) as well as contractors to develop and execute CEO communications

  • Participate in all necessary meetings, status, brainstorming, and presentations to drive delivery of messaging.

  • Track and evaluate outcomes of CEO communications for continuous improvement.

  • Other duties as assigned

Education & Work Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or a related field required. Master's degree preferred.

  • Highly organized and energetic communications professional with 6-8 years of relevant experience

  • Outstanding writing skills with a proven ability to write for different channels (email, Slack, blogs) and audiences.

  • Commitment to quality, accuracy, and clarity in their work product and in their communications with others.

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly assess and understand situations and capture and express the CEO’s unique style, tone, and voice

  • Demonstrated ability to simplify messaging and craft compelling narratives

  • Proven track record in executive communication.

  • High degree of professionalism and ability to interface with senior executives.

  • Bold purpose, flexible, adaptable, and collaborative personality.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodations.

  • Work is generally done sitting, talking, hearing, and typing. Visual acuity to use a keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

Work environment

Work is regularly performed in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment.
