The Senior Accountant will be responsible for performing complex month and year-end close accounting procedures by analyzing, interpreting, and reporting on various types of financial information for SHRM and its affiliates. This position prepares and distributes timely and accurate monthly financial statements for SHRM Foundation.

Your Day:

  • Prepare accurate and timely Foundation monthly financial statement package and analyzes monthly financial reports and various supporting schedules for SHRM and the Foundation.

  • Prepare, maintain, and coordinate detailed journal entries as well as ensures proper documentation backup for the general ledger for SHRM and affiliates.

  • Reconcile SHRM's investment portfolio by reviewing complex investment transactions and fund managers’ statements. Prepares corresponding monthly journal entries and annual footnote disclosures.

  • Maintain accurate inventory count of SHRM by identifying, investigating, and correcting the inventory records. Participates in year-end inventory audit.

  • Monitor and reconcile intercompany activities between SHRM and the Foundation.

  • On a monthly basis, prepare reconciliations and analyses of assigned balance sheet and income statement accounts, resolving discrepancies in a timely manner.

  • Ensure the Foundation’s cash receipts are received and recorded properly in the general ledger.

  • Record proper revenue recognition of contributions and grants received by the Foundation.

  • Maintain accurate inventory count of SHRM by identifying, investigating, and correcting the inventory records. Participates in year-end inventory audit.

  • Manage schedules and work papers for external audit. Reviews the draft audited financial statements for accuracy as well as provide the backup documentation

  • Complete ad hoc reports and reconciliations upon request.

  • Assist in the evaluation and testing of modified accounting system or external databases used by other Departments to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial output.

  • Mentor junior level staff

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Must Haves:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.

  • At least five (5) years related accounting work experience required, preferably with an accounting and tax office for a multi-structured organization requiring consolidations accounting.

  • Must have understanding of all elements of financial operations and their impact on the general ledger.

  • Must have strong knowledge of 501c3 nonprofit organizations and accounting for grants/contributions received.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience in preparation, analysis, and evaluation of complex financial statements, budgets, and/or related data and financial reports.

  • Understanding of accounting treatment for revenue recognition concepts relative to restricted funding (grants and contributions).

  • Knowledge of accounting for inventory and internal controls.

  • Advanced Microsoft (MS) Excel skills and comprehensive knowledge of MS Word and MS PowerPoint.

  • Ability to effectively communicate and present financial information verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with the other departments and external customers.

  • Self-disciplined and capable of completing job duties in a timely manner and with a high level of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail.

  • Excellent problem solving and good decision-making skills.

  • Complete tasks within critical deadlines.

Let Us Know if You Have:

  • CPA or master’s degree in a related field

  • Experience in NetSuite

  • Comprehensive knowledge of NetSuite ERP system and Adaptive Planning budgeting system


  • CPA preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodations.

  • Work is generally done sitting, talking, hearing, and typing. Visual acuity to use a keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

Work Environment

  • Work is regularly performed in a combination of office and conference settings and routinely uses standard office equipment.

  • Travel Required: Occasional 0-10%
