SHRM Senior Researcher in Alexandria, Virginia


SHRM’s Research Department’s mission is to be the go-to source for effective and innovative practices at the intersection of people and work that improve the employee experience and business performance. The department contributes to SHRM’s overarching thought leadership mission to advance the HR profession (and professional) by providing evidence-based insights, recommendations, and innovations at the intersection of people and work.

The Senior Specialist, Strategic Research Initiatives helps achieve SHRM’s recognition as a thought leader in the Human Resources industry by leading large and complex research programs that support the organization’s key strategic initiatives. These strategic initiatives include, but are not limited to, quantitative and qualitative research on workforce/workplace topics and new product development. The position works collaboratively and guides teams to develop and execute comprehensive research programs, evaluate deliverables and understand the success metrics of the work. This position actively contributes to charting the research strategy and the core activities associated with future strategic initiatives.


Your Day:

  • Conducts research on workplace/workforce topics, using quantitative (survey) and qualitative (interview/focus group) methods to drive SHRM’s thought leadership in work and the workplace.

  • Leads the execution and project management of both research-only projects and research components of large and complex strategic initiatives.

  • Develops narrative, editorially-guided products including, but not limited to, reports, whitepapers, blog posts, web pages, and interactive products that engage diverse audiences with human capital research utilizing research, analytics, and data visualization techniques.

  • Collaborates with SHRM’s Communications, Media Affairs, Editorial and Government Affairs departments to design research projects supporting their initiatives, and develops deliverables that are both engaging and accurate, and to create background briefings using SHRM and external research on topics supporting their initiatives.

  • Works with outside vendors and partners to gather data and develop deliverables, ensuring that projects are completed on time and on budget and projects align with the SHRM’s positions and the needs of internal and external partners.

  • Contributes to the design and/or development of member-oriented interactive data tools and solutions.

  • Collaborates with stakeholders within and beyond the Research team to design and build pilot versions of new SHRM products for HR professionals and business leaders.

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed, including but not limited to, development of research questions, survey instruments, and interview/focus group protocols, design and execution of statistical analyses, data visualization and drafting and editing deliverables.

  • Develops and delivers presentations on research projects to internal SHRM audiences, and at the academic, industry, partner and/or SHRM conferences.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.


Must Haves:

  • Master’s degree in industrial/organizational psychology, economics, data science, or a related field.

  • SHRM-CP/SCP required within one year of employment, if eligible.

  • 3 years of professional experience in project management, data analysis, strategic planning, and development of research products.

  • Demonstrated experience in collaborative research product development with an emphasis on tailoring both instruments and deliverables to their audiences.

  • Working knowledge of data visualization techniques and data-resource technologies.

  • Strong foundation in applied research design, methodology and statistical analysis (using R, Python, SPSS and/or SAS).

  • Superior analytical skills, as demonstrated by a track record of problem-solving activities.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and presentation skills.

  • A deep interest in developing insights and pragmatic research solutions for practitioners at the intersection of people and work.

  • Orientation toward continuous improvement, as demonstrated by a proven track record of innovations and contributions to improving the quality, quantity, and consistency of research and associated deliverables.

  • Ability to work on varied projects and tasks while maintaining timelines.

  • Desire to learn new research tools and develop inventive methods that respond to customer/project needs.

Let us know if you also have:

  • Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology, economics, data science, or a related field.

  • 5 years of relevant experience.

  • A strong foundation in data storytelling and with an emphasis on user-centered deliverable design.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to sit; talk and hear, use hands to type, file, handle or feel. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Visual acuity to use a keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. Light lifting is required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force to constantly move objects.
