SHRM Specialist, Test Development in Alexandria, Virginia

Overview

SHRM Certification, part of the Knowledge Development and Certification division, provides gold standard, next-generation credentials in the field of human resources. These credentials provide HR professionals the opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of the core competencies needed to ensure success in today’s demanding business environment. Members of the Certification team research, develop, manage, validate and improve the certification exams and certification program.

The Test Development Specialist supports the various projects contributing to the test development efforts for both the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP. The position applies HR-specific knowledge and expertise to improve the quality of test items through writing and editing, and respond to queries from linguists about test form and other translations into multiple languages. Projects include administrative projects (such as contract processing), research projects (supporting the work of the scoring and psychometrics team), and test development projects (reviewing/editing items, contributing to Item-level reviews, supporting publishing cycles, in-platform test-form review and score-testing trials) as well as other projects that will build bench strength across the unit to provide backup to multiple positions within the team.

Responsibilities

Your Day:

  • Apply HR-specific knowledge to help write, edit and otherwise revise certification exam test items, practice test items, specialty credential program assessment items and other tests or assessments developed by SHRM in the future and/or through collaboration agreements with other departments, divisions or organizations.

  • Master the item development process to contribute to all current and future test-development process; help maintain and expand the resource library based on HR expertise in order to keep test-writing sources current and timely.

  • Manage queries from linguists working on various translation projects; clarify language to improve the overall quality and accuracy of the translations; interact with and respond to vendor(s) in a timely fashion.

  • Support the accreditation process by helping manage the various application processes required and to help pursue different types of accreditation (both current and future).

  • Help manage the contract negotiation and management process to ensure timely processing of agreements with multiple vendors, so the work of the team continues to move forward according to schedule.

  • Help manage large-scale vendor transition(s) to potentially include test-administration vendor transition and related system(s) transition.

  • Support the work of the scoring and psychometrics team as directed.

  • Support the work of the test security specialist by providing additional information if test security breaches arise or other anomalies indicating a test security problem emerge.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Must Haves:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 5 years including 1-2 years direct work experience in HR

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Excellent writing skills

  • Ability to easily move/pivot between projects

  • Must be resourceful, flexible, able to collaborate and communicate expectations

  • Master’s degree

  • Generalist experience in HR or general management throughout career

  • Vendor management a plus

  • Fluency in Spanish or Mandarin

Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and learn technical information. Light lifting is required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force to constantly move objects.
